When Coach Adam Martin received news that one of his players would be missing practice you can guarantee he would never have expected the reason that would follow.
Carlsbad resident, and one of our very own Carlsbad United players, Nicholas Baer (BU13), was enjoying the 4th of July at Carlsbad State Beach with friends when a single-engine Piper PA18 plane made an emergency landing and unfortunately collided with Nicholas on the way down.
Nicholas was immediately taken to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego for treatment of a gash to his head, a concussion and skull damage. He was underwent surgery and was admitted to an intensive care unit.
Fortunately, Nicholas is a very brave and strong young man and seems to have pulled through the worst of it as he now recovers at home with his family in Carlsbad. He will have to take a break from soccer this season but he made it clear he will be cheering his team mates on throughout, “It was fun to see my team mates and to receive the signed soccer ball from them” Nicholas commented. “It was also very cool of LA Galaxy to send me a signed shirt. I am bummed that I will not be able to help my team on the field this season, but I will be attending games to cheer them on.”
Nicholas’ parents, Bill and Janice, also wanted to pass on their gratitude and ‘thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during Nick’s surgery and recovery. It is very much appreciated.’
You are definitely a fighter Nicholas, we look forward to seeing you out on the fields!
