CHAMPIONSHIP DAY – 07/31/16
It was bitter sweet for our girls today as our GU16 Elite team became National Champions while our U18 Elite girls fell at the final hurdle.
Under-16 Girls: Carlsbad Elite 99 (CA-S) 1-0 La Roca Premier PO (UT)
Our U16 girls held on to a one-goal advantage for nearly the entirety of its matchup with La Roca (UT) to earn a 1-0 victory today and claim the Under-16 Girls National Championship. Jessica Wright gave us a sixth-minute lead when she unleashed a right-footed blast from 20 yards that flew just inside the right post. The girls held La Roca in check for the remainder of the half but LA Roca nearly generated an equalizer midway through the second half when 2015 National Championships Best XI player Anna Escobedo made her way into the top of the LAGSD penalty area and cut onto her right before sending a quick shot curling toward the upper-90. However, LAGSD keeper Avrie Fox lunged to her left to push the La Roca forward’s attempt wide for a corner.
Avrie Fox and our back line proved to be vital to our run to the title. Each of our wins in Frisco came by 1-0 score lines, and our girls conceded just once throughout the entire week. Behind the strength of the defense and timely scoring, the GU16 Elite team secured the victory to claim our club’s second National Championship in as many years.
“Watching them on video the night before we knew they had speed and played a patient build up game. We decided to let them have the ball in their defensive third, then we would pounce when the ball moved further up the field,” said a very proud Carl Higham. “I am so proud to have coached this team over the last 4-5 years and to finally win the biggest prize in the game is so rewarding. Congratulations to all of the players on their performance. Playing five games in six days in one hundred plus degree temperatures and winning a National Championship at the end is something really special. I am sure we will all hold these memories dear forever. I know I will. GET IN THERE GIRLS !!!!!!!”
Under-18 Girls: Carlsbad Elite 97/98 (CA-S) 0-3 Tennessee SC 16 (TN)
The GU18 Elite team faced very strong opposition in the final of the National Championships in the form of Tennessee SC 16 (TN). Tennessee player Peyton DePriest was taken down inside the Carlsbad box, resulting in a penalty kick for Tennessee and a red card for our girls. GU18 Elite keeper, Emily Cuthbert, guessed the right way on the ensuing penalty kick attempt and pushed the shot aside to keep the game scoreless. But just minutes later, U.S. Youth National Team midfielder Karlie Paschall slipped a pass to Juliette Garst, who slid her shot inside the left post to put Tennessee in front. In the 60th minute, Paschall recorded her second assist when she sent a corner kick to the back post, where Callie McKinney headed it home. As our girls frantically chased the game, Tennessee sealed the victory in the 90th minute, as Mackenzie Firek finished a low cross right in front of goal to help Tennessee to the 3-0 victory.
Making the final of the National Championships is still a massive achievement and our GU18 Elite team should be very proud!

SEMI-FINAL DAY – 07/30/16
Both GU16 & GU18 Elite teams will play tomorrow (Sunday, 07/31/16) in the National Championships final after successfully navigating through tough semi final games earlier today.
The GU16 Elite team claimed a spot in Sunday’s final after a Jessica Wright overtime goal earned the 1-0 semi-final win against Florida Krush Black (FL). Carlsbad finished group play as the bracket frontrunner with a 2-1-0 record. Our U16 Elite girls will play La Roca Premier (UT) for the Under-16 Girls National Championship title. The game will kick off at 7:50am, local time, and can be streamed live using the following link: http://championships.usyouthsoccer.org/live/
Our GU18 Elite team and Tennessee SC 16 (TN) will take the field for the Under-18 Girls National Championship final tomorrow, 8:20am KO, local time. The girls qualified after earning a 2-1 win over KHA Red (OH-S) in the semi-finals. Summer Bales gave our U16s the lead in the first half, and Morgan Jackson from KHA tied up the match in the second half, but it was a Hadley Sbrega goal in the 81st minute that earned Carlsbad the victory. Our girls finished group play 2-0-1 for the first seed, scoring 11 goals and allowing two. They have earned a third place medal in the last three years and will be looking to change that in their first final match tomorrow. Their game can also be streamed live using the following link: http://championships.usyouthsoccer.org/live/
Coach Michael Duggan commented, “Both teams were fantastic today and finished their games really strong. All the hard work and training prior to the National Championships is starting paying off and both teams are now within touching distance of the silverware. Five games in six days is a massive ask but these girls are in fantastic shape both mentally and physically and I am optimistic both teams can complete the task tomorrow. Regardless, we are very proud.”
DAY 3 – 07/28/16
Despite an ‘off’ final group game from both LAGSD GU16 & GU18 Elite teams, both managed to qualify in first place in their respective groups and will go on to meet the second placed team from the opposing group this Saturday in the National Championships semis.
Our U16 ladies were involved in yet another close game today but unfortunately conceded a well taken goal by Gold Cup in the final 5 minutes to lose 1-0. Despite the result, the girls performed well and were unlucky not to score themselves, hitting the post and crossbar late in the 2nd half.
“Now it’s preparation time for the semi finals against Florida Krush on Saturday,” said an excited Coach Carl Higham. “Every day the players have been having ice baths, drinking plenty fluids and eating plenty of pasta, not to mention taking salt tablets to replenish our lost sodium in these 100+ degree games. As a team, we are all looking forward to our first ever appearance in a National Championships semi final.”
Our U18 ladies tied 0-0 against Ambassadors to win their group by a clear 2 points. This Saturday they will play KHA Red from Ohio in the semis. Their game, which will kick off at 5:30am local time, can be streamed live using the following link: http://championships.usyouthsoccer.org/live/

DAY 2 – 07/27/16
Both LAGSD Elite teams built on their fantastic first day by winning their second group games today at the National Championships. Today’s results mean that both teams have already qualified for the semis. Regardless, both teams will be wanting to win their last group game tomorrow to outright win the group and face the second placed team from the opposing group.
The GU18 Elite team faced a very tough NJ Stallions team this morning and won 3-1, with another brace by Hayley Mayne and one from Shelby Cormier sealed the deal.
Coach Courtney commented, “It was a tough game. We battled and worked tirelessly for 90 minutes. The Stallions were a good team that asked us a lot of questions but we handled it well. It took great performances from everyone today to come away with the result. While we are certainly excited to be advancing on to the semi-final, we are not looking past tomorrow’s game as we continue to take it one game at a time.”
“For me, this has to be one of the hardest games we have played over the years at the National Championships,” said Coach Michael. “The girls were fantastic from front to back, working so hard to close the opposition down and give them no time on the ball. Getting the win was a deserving reward for what the girls put in on the field!”
The GU16 Elite followed up their win yesterday with another win today against FCKC Elite from Missouri to qualify for the semi finals on Saturday. It was a great team performance with the only goal being scored in the 1st half by Emily Knepler. The U16 girls managed to keep everything tight in defense and yet again recorded another shut out to win the game.

DAY 1 – 07/26/16
What a tremendous start for both LA Galaxy San Diego GU16 & GU18 Elite teams at the National Championships in Frisco, Texas.
Our U16 ladies won their 1st group game against defending champions, Legends FC. The winning goal came from a Kayleigh Webb header of a corner just before half time.
“We’re ecstatic. This is the first win at the National Championships ever for this team,” Coach Carl Higham said. “We have tied, lost and our first goal for this tournament was to get a win, and to get a result on the first day is amazing.”

Our U18 ladies went to town against Syracuse DA, beating them 6-0 with 5 different scorers. Hayley Mayne bagged a brace with Caitlin McCarthy, Marcela Macias, Shelby Wray and Kallie Kampfl all getting on the scoresheet. Coach Michael commented, “It was a very positive start for us. We were able to get everyone minutes today which sometimes doesn’t happen at this level. The goals we scored were fantastic, from the build up play to the finishes, top notch stuff. We’ll look to build from today’s performance and prepare for tomorrow.”
