What a night last night was at Maffucci Field, Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad. It was the home opening WPSL game for our LAGSD Women’s Team and, with nearly 600 in attendance providing an atmosphere which could only be described as ‘electric’, our ladies did not disappoint their new fan base!
The match started with a high pace tempo, the players were really feeding off the crowds energy. After a few chances on goal LAGSD were able to open the scoring by committing numbers forward, with Huli DeArmas serving a great ball across to Bridget Daley for the finish. Despite our ladies having the majority of possession in the first half, Phoenix del Sol was able to capitalize on missed opportunities by LAGSD to clear the ball, and tied the game up at the conclusion of the first half.
Again, fueled by the infectious energy and enthusiasm of the fans, the moment the second half whistle blew LAGSD came out with intensity, delivering crowd roaring tackles, high pressuring the Phoenix defense, and continual drives towards goal.
Finally, after relentless surges forward, a cross from Makaela Thompson was spectacularly heal flicked into the goal by Katie O’Laughlin to bring LAGSD the game winning goal.
For the remainder of the game our ladies held strong to ongoing counter attacks from Phoenix, and at the end of 90, LA Galaxy SD’s first home game of the season concluded with a resounding W.
LAGSD Women’s Coach, Greg LaPorte, commented, “I was very pleased with the Team’s performance tonight. It was a great way to open at home. I am still checking ESPN’s Sports Center Goal of Week for Katie’s finish, unbelievable!”
LaPorte continued, “We look to bring the same drive, creativity, and determination in tonight’s game versus FC Tuscon at Maffucci Field, Army and Navy Academy, kicking off at 6pm. It was a great start and I am confident that our LAGSD Women’s Team is bringing a new wave of dominance to the WPSL. We look forward to seeing all of our fans out there tonight again!”
